Introduction to Hammer & Chisel Stone Sculpture

Learn stone carving like the Renaissance masters! The process of carving stone with hand chisels and mallet is an extremely satisfying ancient art form. It is a medium that develops manual dexterity and craftsmanship with a high degree of mental and perceptual stimulation.

NOTE: Stone carving requires time and patience so you will likely NOT complete a project in one four-hour class.

In this 4 hour class you will design your stone project, remove material using hand tools (files, rasps, hammer & chisel) and ultimately finish the sculpture (sanding and polishing). It takes time but the results are beautiful and timeless. It’s the world’s oldest art form!

We recommend closed toe shoes and comfortable clothes (that can get dusty) since we carve outside under a cover. We have dust masks and goggles for your protection.

Soapstone is recommended for beginners due to its forgiving nature. We stock and sell small (4 pound) soapstones and alabasters. Please visit sculpturehouse.com or Blick (Pasadena or Los Angeles locations--call first!) for additional sizes/varieties. We have studio tools and protective gear you may use.

Much of our ancient history is carved in stone and we still believe that stone is absolutely relevant for sculpture during this digital age. Won’t you join us?
